The last time we were at Island Park, Maggie was introduced to the Moose Family. She was so excited that she decided that “I wanna eat dat baby moose”. Well, you can imagine our joy when we arrived at Grandma’s cabin this weekend to find Mama and Baby Moose waiting for us in the back yard. The funny thing is… Mama Moose was a heck of a lot less scary looking the first time we saw her. Notice how Mama Moose is roughly the size of a mini van?
Baby Moose was much less threating. He was almost cute… in an ugly mutated horsey way.
The problem with cute and cuddly Baby Moose, was that big, freaking scary Mama never left his side.
Baby and Mama lounged around the back yard at the cabin for about half an hour. It was amazing. We couldn’t keep our eyes off of them (mostly because we were terrified that Mama Moose was going to trample us into jelly). Baby and Mama took their pick of the tastiest berries and leaves in the yard.
It was hard to top the excitement of Day One at the Cabin… but we sure tried. The problem was that in Island Park it is approximately 75 degrees colder than everywhere else in the world. Being the geniuses that we are, we decided to have a fun-filled picnic in the frozen tundra of West Yellowstone.
Don’t we look like we are having a barrel of fun?
For some reason, Mandee felt the need to included a picture of me eating one of my ridiculously large sandwiches. Just for the record… I make a freaking awesome sandwich.
We spent the rest of our day at the Grizzly Discovery Center. I can’t tell if Alex was really impressed or if he was having a bad reaction to one of my freaking awesome sandwiches.
Maggie and Sam thought they would like to join the woof family. I mean… who wouldn’t want to live in such an awesome house.
Next we met Sam. No, not that Sam… this one.
Sam was a slobbering, cuddly-looking, 1,100 pound grizzly bear.
The handlers would hide food around the grizzly bear habitat and then let the bears absolutely tear the place apart to find it.
They had a great cage play area for the kids. I wonder how much they charge for extended stays.
Next, the kids were introduced to Chief Squatinthebush (Grandma’s words, not ours).
All in all, we had a great time.
And finally, no trip to West Yellowstone is complete without a little bit of Huckleberry ice cream.

hmmmm....wonder if that was the same mama & baby moose we saw while canoeing the river this summer....sure looks the same! Oh wait, all moose look the same. And yes, we thought for sure she was going to charge us in our boats. SCARY! Looks like a fun trip! :)
I can't believe you were so up close and personal with those moose. And wow, it's cold up there in Yellowstone? That is so surprising because we are ROASTING right now down here. Famous last words... I probably just invited a bizzard to my neck of the woods.
